Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ'S)
Marine Foam Flexa is a high-quality, durable foam designed for use in boat seats, golf carts, restaurant booths, and other applications. It is available in two densities: medium and firm. The medium density foam is softer and provides more give, while the firm density foam is more stable and provides less give. Flexa Marine Foam is also antimicrobial to prevent mold and mildew growth.
Flexa Marine Foam offers several advantages:
- Durable: Made with high-quality foam, it resists wear and tear in high-traffic areas.
- Water Resistant: The standard foam repels water, and the Flexa Quick Dry option allows water to flow through and drain quickly.
- Easy to Work With: You can easily shape the foam using a carving knife and cheese grater for custom applications.
- Open and expand the foam: Unwrap your foam promptly and let it fully decompress for 1-3 days. You can use steam to speed up this process. Not letting it expand can permanently damage the foam.
- Seal seams and manage moisture: Use Seamstick to prevent water from seeping through seams. Silk film can protect the foam from water, but remove it to prevent moisture trapping. Use it only with antimicrobial foam.
- Ensure proper drainage: Drill one-inch holes in the bottom of your seat boards and silk film to allow water to drain and prevent mildew. Marine mesh underlining also promotes drainage and air circulation.
- Minimize stress on seams: Avoid stepping on seats, and choose a firmer foam for better structure and reduced strain on seams.
- Protect your seats from water damage: Cover your boat when not in use, and remove cushions for storage if a cover isn't possible. Dry wet antimicrobial foam by flipping cushions and letting them dry in the sun.
- Shaping the foam: For shaping purposes, you can use an electric meat carving knife and a cheese grater.
Flexa Marine Foam is a versatile product suitable for various applications, including:
- Boat Seats & Interiors
- Golf Carts
- Restaurant Booths
- Patio Furniture
- And hundreds of other projects!
Use breathable marine vinyl and ensure proper drainage. Here are some tips:
- Seamstick: Seal seams to minimize water entry.
- Silk Film (Use with Caution): Protects foam from water damage but can trap moisture if not used properly. Only use with antimicrobial foam and remove after placement for air circulation.
- Drainage Holes: Drill holes in seat bases and silk film to allow water to drain.
- Marine Mesh Underlining: Improves drainage and air circulation.
- Boat Covers: Protect your boat and prevent waterlogged seats.
- Drying Wet Cushions: If the foam gets wet, flip cushions and place them in the sun to dry. Consider storing cushions indoors when not in use.
- Open your foam immediately upon arrival and release compression. Rolls are compressed for shipping purposes please allow 24-72 hours after removing the shrink wrap for the foam to bounce back to full size. You can use steam to accelerate the bounce back. If you do not open immediately irreversible compression damage can occur.
- Use Seamstick to help seal seams - This will help reduce the amount of water that may enter through seams.
- Silk Film can be your best or worse friend as it will help protect the foam from getting wet, but when it's used improperly it can trap the moisture in the seat. Only use silk foam with antimicrobial foam. Some people will only use the silk foam to help slide the foam into place and will then remove it to prevent trapping moisture
- Create drain holes by drilling 1" holes in the bottom of boards so water can drain. Make sure you add drainage holes at the bottom of your silk film to allow any trapped water to escape.
- Use Marine Mesh Underlining on the bottom of your cushion to help water drain and improve air circulation in your foam.
- Its never recommended to step on boat seats as eventually, the seams will rip out, but a firm foam will help provide more structure creating less pull on seams in these areas
- It's important to cover your boat when not in use to prevent waterlogged seats.
- If the antimicrobial foam gets wet flip the cushions upside down and lay the cushions in the sun to help dry it out
- If a cover is not possible we recommend removing seat cushions and storing them inside
- You can use an electric meat carving knife and a cheese grater to help shape the foam
